Mansión Seré, Memory site and clandestine detention center in Castelar, Argentina
Mansión Seré is a memory site on a large property in Castelar, Argentina, where a former military complex once stood. The excavated remains show the foundations of a two-story building with a basement, now surrounded by trees and open ground.
The Argentine Air Force used the property from 1977 to 1978 as a secret detention center where hundreds of people were held. The building was later torn down and the foundations only uncovered years afterward.
The site takes its name from the Seré family who once lived there and now shows an open area with partially excavated structures. Visitors experience the space as a quiet park where they walk among the foundations and reflect on what happened.
The site is entered through an open gate with paths running between the excavations. Anyone visiting should wear comfortable shoes as you walk over uneven ground.
In March 1978, four prisoners escaped through a first-floor window using knotted blankets during a heavy rainstorm. The escape is considered one of the few successful breakouts from such detention centers during that period.
