José Amalfitani Stadium, Rugby union and football stadium in Liniers, Argentina
José Amalfitani Stadium is a rugby and football venue in Buenos Aires featuring a distinctive concrete structure built across multiple levels. The facility accommodates approximately 50,000 spectators and includes press areas and seating sections designed for different types of attendees.
Construction started in 1947 and replaced an earlier wooden stadium, with completion occurring in 1951 under Vélez Sarsfield president José Amalfitani's leadership. The venue represented a significant shift in the city's sports infrastructure, enabling larger crowds and modern facilities for events.
The stadium serves as home to Vélez Sarsfield football club and as the national rugby ground for Argentina's Los Pumas team. Visitors experience how both sports shape the neighborhood's identity and bring crowds of dedicated fans together throughout the year.
The stadium is located near Liniers railway station and accessible through multiple entrances, with food stands and areas designated for different ticket categories. Plan to arrive with plenty of time on event days, as crowds can be substantial and parking may be limited.
In 1969, this became the first South American stadium to install modern floodlighting systems, allowing evening events and night matches. This technological advance made it possible to schedule events more flexibly and attract spectators who could not attend during daytime hours.
