Hospital Borda, hospital in Argentina
Hospital Borda is a public hospital in Buenos Aires specialized in mental health, offering free medical services to all city residents. The building contains multiple departments, laboratories, and research centers designed to support patients with mental and neurological conditions, operating twenty-four hours daily for both routine and emergency care.
Founded in 1859 as Hospicio de San Buenaventura, it underwent name changes reflecting evolving medical approaches and was renamed for Saint Mercy in 1873. A turning point came in the 1950s when Dr. Ramón Carrillo advocated treating mental patients with the same care as those with physical illness, leading to its current name in 1967.
The hospital runs Radio La Colifata, a radio station managed by patients that gives them a voice to share their stories with the community. A cultural center on site hosts activities and events that bring patients and staff together to learn and reflect on mental health issues.
The hospital is located in Barracas and is easily accessible by several bus lines as well as by train from Constitución station on the Roca line. Patients can schedule appointments by phone or online, and staff can provide information about vaccination programs and specialized health services available at the facility.
During World War One the facility housed nearly six thousand patients, a number that has decreased to approximately fourteen hundred inpatient residents today. This shift reflects modern approaches that keep patients closer to their families and communities rather than in long-term institutional care.
