Museu da Baronesa, Historic mansion museum in Pelotas, Brazil.
The Museu da Baronesa is a square neoclassical building with verandas, a chapel, and a bathing tower set within surrounding gardens. It houses around 2,600 objects spanning from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, including furnishings, photographs, paintings, porcelain, silverware, and textiles.
The house was built in 1863 and belonged to Colonel Anibal Antunes Maciel, who received a baron title in 1884 after freeing his enslaved workers. This occurred four years before the national abolition of slavery.
The collection reflects how wealthy families in Pelotas lived and what mattered to them in the late 1800s. Visitors encounter furnishings and everyday objects that show their daily routines and tastes.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM and on weekends and holidays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Students and seniors have access to discounted admission rates.
The museum runs a specialized conservation program for delicate textiles such as gloves and historical garments. These fragile items are preserved using custom protective supports made from specially selected materials.
