Catedral São Francisco de Paula

Catedral São Francisco de Paula is a cathedral located in downtown Pelotas featuring two prominent towers, a central dome, and white walls. The interior accommodates approximately 1,700 people and includes spaces for gatherings, a crypt below ground, and a dedicated sanctuary area.

Construction began in 1826 and the building continued to develop over several decades. In 1846, Emperor Dom Pedro II laid a foundation stone for a planned expansion, reflecting the building's growing importance to the city.

Italian artists created the interior decorations using Renaissance and Baroque elements that remain visible throughout the space. These artistic choices reflect the taste and craftsmanship valued by the community during that period of the city's development.

The building is easily accessible in the city center and holds services several times per week. Visitors should be mindful that this is an active place of worship, so quiet behavior is expected.

The stained glass windows were made by Casa Genta from Porto Alegre and display biblical scenes. Local families donated these windows to the building, and they remain on view today.
