The municipality of Xanxerê was officially established on February 27, 1954, during a period of substantial urban development in post-war Brazil.
The local population of 51,642 residents maintains traditions influenced by Italian and German immigrants who arrived in the early twentieth century.
The municipality coordinates regional development initiatives with 17 neighboring cities through the Association of Cities of Alto Irani organization.
A severe F3 tornado struck Xanxerê on April 20, 2015, affecting over 2,600 homes and leading to significant infrastructure changes.
