Cordillera de Sama Biological Reserve, Nature reserve in Tarija Department, Bolivia.
The Cordillera de Sama Biological Reserve extends across 108,500 hectares of varied landscapes, from high mountains reaching 4,700 meters to valleys at 1,950 meters elevation.
The territory within the reserve contains evidence of human settlements dating back 8,000 years, including irrigation channels and water tanks from Incan and pre-Incan civilizations.
The reserve incorporates traditional agricultural practices, maintaining genetic diversity of regional crops such as tubers and corn through local farming methods.
Visitors can reach the reserve by taking buses from Tarija to Tupiza or Tarija to Villazón, with permits available at the SERNAP office near Tarija bus station.
The Tajzara lakes system within the reserve provides habitat for three different flamingo species and more than 30 additional bird species throughout the year.
