Luque, Urban district in Central Department, Paraguay
Luque is an urban district in Central Department, Paraguay, where residential areas alternate with commercial zones along paved roads. The district sits at around 120 meters elevation in a flat landscape southeast of the capital.
The area was officially founded in 1781 and grew over decades from a small settlement into a larger administrative district. During the 20th century, the district gained further importance with the construction of the international airport.
The guitar makers in Luque's workshops carve, varnish and tune their instruments using methods passed down from father to son. Visitors can often hear the sound of tools and smell the wood through open doors.
Regular bus lines connect the district to Asunción, with journeys taking between 30 and 60 minutes depending on traffic. The terrain is flat and accessible for pedestrians, though some areas are easier to reach by vehicle.
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport lies within the district boundaries and serves as the country's main gateway for international flights. The proximity to the airport has drawn many families and businesses to settle here over the years.
