Rio do Sul

Rio do Sul is a municipality in Santa Catarina, located on elevated terrain and divided by three major rivers that flow through its landscape. The Itajaí-Açu, Itajaí do Norte, and Itajaí do Oeste shape both the geography and daily life of the community.

The area originally belonged to Blumenau until it became an independent municipality in 1931 through state law. This separation marked the start of the community as a distinct place with its own identity.

German architectural influences appear throughout the town, visible in buildings like the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist and Ponte dos Arcos. Walking through the streets, you notice these European features in everyday structures.

When visiting, keep in mind that the city sits along rivers and can experience flooding during rainy seasons. The best time to explore is during drier months when pathways and streets remain more accessible.

The region saw unusual snowfall in 2013, a rare occurrence in this tropical setting. Locals still remember this snow vividly, and it remains one of the most memorable weather events in the town's recent past.
