Pomerode, German heritage town in Santa Catarina, Brazil

This town sits in the valley of the Itajaí-Açu river and is known for its residential streets lined with buildings that display exposed brick and timber framing. This architecture shapes much of the small-town landscape and recalls European craft traditions.

Immigrants from Pomerania arrived during the years starting in 1861 and began building a community that held onto its language and customs. This founding gave the place a name and a character that continue to the present day.

Street signs often show two languages and remind visitors of the roots this regional community still honors. In markets and restaurants people frequently speak German and Portuguese side by side, giving an everyday glimpse into this linguistic life.

Many visitors explore the town center on foot and discover workshops and small businesses located next to residential houses. The setting of the river valley invites short walks where it is easy to find your way.

In the schools the dialect spoken by the first settlers in the nineteenth century is still taught. This instructed form of Pommersch creates a rare linguistic connection between generations.
