Assis, Administrative municipality in São Paulo, Brazil.
Assis is a municipality with around 105,000 inhabitants in southwestern São Paulo state. The area spreads across a plateau with gentle hills and is marked by agricultural land and urban neighborhoods.
The settlement emerged in the early 20th century with the expansion of railroads and coffee plantations across the region. In 1917, the town separated from neighboring Platina and gained status as an independent municipality.
The place takes its name to honor Machado de Assis, a major writer in Brazilian literature. The presence of several universities makes the city a regional center for study and research.
The city sits along state highway SP-333, which eases access from other regions of São Paulo. The center can be explored on foot, while outlying neighborhoods are best reached by local bus.
The area forms an ecological transition between Atlantic Forest and Cerrado savanna. This position between two vegetation zones creates a particular mix of plant and animal species along the city edges.
