Sumaré is a municipality in metropolitan Campinas, São Paulo state, with residential areas and commercial zones. The city spreads over flat to gently rolling terrain with wide streets and a mix of low and mid-rise buildings.
The settlement began in the second half of the 19th century as an agricultural area along a railway line. Over the following decades, it evolved into an industrial site within the growing metropolitan region of Campinas.
The name comes from a native tree that once grew widely in the region and shaped its identity. Residents often gather in public squares and parks on weekends, where families spend time together and vendors sell snacks.
The municipality lies about 100 km (62 miles) northwest of São Paulo and is reachable by highway and regional buses. Many visitors use it as a base for trips to surrounding cities in the Campinas area.
Many factories and warehouses shape the cityscape and reflect the industrial growth of recent decades. Numerous workers commute daily from neighboring municipalities to work here.
