Tupã extends across 628 square kilometers between the Aguapeí and Rio do Peixe rivers, 530 kilometers from São Paulo capital.
The municipality was established in 1929 by businessman Luiz de Souza Leão, who transformed an area of tropical forest into a settlement.
The name of the municipality derives from the thunder deity in Guaraní indigenous mythology, representing the regional native heritage.
The city maintains 15 basic health units, two hospitals, and numerous educational institutions, including a campus of São Paulo State University.
The municipality has earned recognition as the National Photography Capital due to its concentration of photography-related businesses.
