Gruta de Santa Luzia park, Environmental park in Mauá, Brazil
Gruta de Santa Luzia is an ecological park where multiple water springs originate, including the source of the Tamanduateí River, surrounded by Atlantic Forest vegetation and legally protected natural areas. The grounds feature walking trails, picnic areas, and open spaces designed for various outdoor activities.
The site originated from a granite quarry where workers in the 1800s used spring water for eye washing, creating a local connection to religious devotion. The formal dedication to Saint Lucy occurred in 1975.
The park hosts municipal plant nurseries that grow tree seedlings for distribution across the city, making it a center for community-led forest recovery. Visitors can observe gardening work happening regularly as part of ongoing restoration efforts.
The park sits at Luzia da Silva Itabaiana Street 101 and is easily accessed on foot, with marked trails suitable for different fitness levels. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow time to explore the various sections at a relaxed pace.
Within the park stands a heart-shaped rock formation that draws visitors and holds significance in local stories and beliefs. This natural structure is relatively easy to locate and serves as a popular photo spot.
