Mongaguá, Coastal municipality in São Paulo, Brazil
Mongaguá is a coastal municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Baixada Santista, stretching across about 143 square kilometers along the Atlantic shoreline. The settlement sits at approximately 8 meters above sea level and blends urban areas with natural coastal landscapes.
The municipality was officially established on 17 December 1959, transforming from a rural settlement into an organized community. Its street layout follows a grid pattern running southeast to northwest, reflecting modern urban planning principles.
Two indigenous communities, Aldeia Itaóca and Aguapéu, call this area home within the Atlantic Mata reserve and continue practicing their ancestral ways. Their presence shapes the region's character and connects visitors to the land's original inhabitants.
The BR-101 highway provides direct road access, connecting the municipality to Santos and São Paulo city for easy travel. The flat terrain and proximity to major transport routes make navigation straightforward for visitors.
The fishing pier serves year-round as both a working fishing platform and a popular surfing spot where waves attract riders across seasons. This dual purpose makes it a gathering place where different visitors share the water and shoreline.
