Vassununga State Park, State park in Santa Rita do Passa Quatro, Brazil.
Vassununga State Park is a protected area covering 2071 hectares split into six sections near São Paulo. The land contains both Atlantic Forest and cerrado vegetation, two ecosystems that grow naturally in this region.
The land was once part of the Vassununga Sugar Mill, which went bankrupt in 1969. The state government acquired the property and created the park in 1970 to protect the natural ecosystems.
The park runs education programs that teach visitors about the forest ecosystems found here and how to protect them. You can see how these spaces are managed to balance nature with human activity.
The park sits about 245 kilometers from São Paulo and is reached via the SP-330 highway. Inside you will find walking trails and observation points scattered throughout the six sections for exploring the natural environment.
The Patriarch is a massive jequitibá-rosa tree with a trunk measuring about 3.6 meters across and reaching about 40 meters in height. This specimen is among the oldest trees of its kind in all of Brazil.
