Parque da Aclimação, Municipal park in São Paulo, Brazil.
Parque da Aclimação is a municipal park in the Aclimação neighborhood of São Paulo, Brazil, built around a natural lagoon and crossed by paved walking paths shaded by eucalyptus trees. The grounds also hold a Japanese garden with water features, a small outdoor performance shell, sports courts, fitness equipment, and an environmental library.
The land was first used as a dairy farm in the late 19th century, and it later became the site of São Paulo's first zoo in the early 20th century. When the zoo eventually closed and relocated to the south of the city, the grounds were opened to the public as a neighborhood park.
The name of the neighborhood, Aclimação, comes from the Portuguese word for acclimatization, a reference to the site's early use for adapting imported livestock to the local climate. The Japanese garden inside the park reflects the strong presence of the Japanese-Brazilian community in this part of São Paulo, and it draws visitors who want to experience that connection in a tangible way.
The closest subway station is Paraíso, served by Lines 1 and 2, from where the park is reachable on foot or by a short bus ride. The terrain is mostly flat and the paths are paved, so getting around is easy regardless of the entrance you use.
One of the most talked-about animals in the old zoo was a polar bear, an animal completely out of place in a tropical city, which made it a genuine curiosity for São Paulo residents at the time. Nothing in the park today marks this episode, so most visitors walk through without ever knowing it happened.
