Casa Modernista is a residential building in Vila Mariana that combines geometric forms with generous window openings and open floor plans. The structure features clean wall surfaces, floating elements, and a clear separation between interior and exterior spaces.
Architect Gregori Warchavchik designed this house in 1928 as one of the first modernist residential buildings in Brazil. The project helped introduce new architectural concepts to the country and opened the way for other buildings of this style.
The residence represents a shift in how Brazilians understood domestic living spaces, encouraging architects and homeowners to embrace new design approaches. This change was unusual for many at the time, as traditional houses looked entirely different from what the building demonstrated.
The building is located on Rua Santa Cruz and can be viewed from the street to observe its design features. Access to the property is possible from the road, and visitors can photograph the facade and window arrangements from different angles.
The house uses natural brightness through deliberate window placement that floods rooms with daylight while maintaining privacy. This strategy was novel at the time it was built and has since been repeated in many modern homes.
