Bragança Paulista, Municipal administrative center in São Paulo state, Brazil
Bragança Paulista is a municipality in São Paulo state that spreads across gentle hills and valleys at an elevation of roughly 800 meters. The place lies in southeastern Brazil and is divided into a central town core with surrounding residential neighborhoods and rural areas.
The settlement began in 1763 under the name Conceição do Jaguari at a river crossing. In 1797 the place received its current name as a tribute to the Portuguese city of Bragança.
The city takes its name from the Portuguese town of Bragança and keeps this European connection in its identity. Locals know the place for its sausage specialties, prepared in many households and shops following old recipes.
The city can be reached by regional highways that take about an hour of driving from São Paulo. A small regional airport connects the place with other destinations in the state.
The local football club Bragantino won the São Paulo state championship in 1990 and now plays in the national leagues. The team holds its home matches in a stadium on the edge of town that draws fans from across the region.
