Atibaia is a municipality in São Paulo state, Brazil, located between the cities of São Paulo and Campinas at an elevation of around 800 meters (2,600 feet). The area includes hills, forests, and farmland spread across more than 470 square kilometers (180 square miles).
In 1665, Jerônimo de Camargo built a chapel near the river that served as a rest stop for travelers and mineral explorers. The settlement grew over the centuries and became an important trading point between São Paulo and the northern regions.
The name comes from the indigenous Tupi language and means healthy climate, a reference to the cooler temperatures found at this altitude. Many farms in the area still grow strawberries using methods brought by Japanese immigrants in the 20th century.
The town is easily reached by car and lies about an hour's drive from São Paulo. The area works well for day trips and weekend visits, especially for hikers and nature lovers.
The Museu João Batista Conti displays arms, furniture, coins, and religious objects from Brazil's colonial period. The collection gives visitors a glimpse into the life and equipment of early settlers.
