Praia de Lopes Mendes

Praia de Lopes Mendes is an expansive sandy beach along the coast of Ilha Grande with light-colored sand and clear water ideal for swimming and surfing. The shoreline extends over several kilometers, offering plenty of space for water activities and beach exploration.

The area served as a safe harbor for ships during colonial times and underwent various uses in later periods. The island changed hands and purposes several times before becoming a destination for visitors today.

The beach draws locals and visitors who swim, surf, or spend time by the water following the rhythm of seasons and weather. Social life here centers on water-based activities and outdoor gatherings rather than permanent settlements.

Getting here requires taking a boat from Abraão to Praia do Pouso, then walking about an hour to arrive at the beach. Plan for dry season months when weather conditions are more stable for the journey.

The sand contains a high concentration of quartz crystals that create a firm surface beneath your feet. As you walk, the sand produces audible sounds, an effect many visitors notice right away.
