Mother Church of Our Lady of Remedies, 18th-century Catholic church in Paraty, Brazil.

The Mother Church of Our Lady of Remedies is a building with white walls and a prominent bell tower located at the heart of the historic town center. Inside, you find elaborate wooden altars decorated with religious artwork from the colonial period.

According to tradition, the first church was built as a condition of Maria Jácome de Melo's 1640 land donation, with works starting in 1646. Demolished in 1668, it was replaced by a new church expanded and completed in 1873 with funds and slave labour provided by Geralda Maria da Silva. The bell towers and rear sections were never finished as originally planned.

This church remains central to Catholic worship in the town, where residents gather for prayer and celebration throughout the year. You can observe the active religious life of the community, especially during local festivals when processions move through the surrounding streets.

The building stands in the old town and opens daily for visitors. Guided tours are offered in Portuguese and English to help you understand the architectural details and layout.

The church's bell towers and rear section were never finished to the original design, and that unfinished state is still visible today. The upper galleries now hold the Pinacoteca Antônio Marino Gouveia, with works by Djanira, Anita Malfatti, Di Cavalcanti, Frank Schaeffer and Armando Viana.
