Muda, Residential sub-neighborhood in Tijuca, Brazil
Muda is a sub-neighborhood in the western part of Tijuca, sitting between Saens Peña Square and the Usina sub-neighborhood. Its streets are narrow and lined with residential buildings of several floors, giving the area a compact and urban feel.
The name comes from the time when horses had to stop here to change their horseshoes before climbing the muddy slope of Alto da Boa Vista. This practical function gave the area its name and shaped how it was known for a long time.
Xavier de Brito Square, locally called Horse Square, has offered pony rides and goat-drawn carriage tours for generations. Families with children come here regularly, making the square one of the most recognizable spots in the area.
The area is easy to reach since it has a bus terminal stop for line 213. Visitors who want to explore further will also find the 19th Police Station and the Municipal Reference Center for Carioca Music nearby.
The sub-neighborhood sits right on the edge of Tijuca National Park, one of the largest urban forests in the world, reachable on foot from here. This direct transition from dense residential streets to tropical forest surprises even many locals.
