Obra do Berço

Obra do Berço is a modernist structure in Lagoa featuring two distinct volumes: a cubic section with three floors and an L-shaped form supported by cylindrical pillars. The composition balances solid and floating elements with extensive glazing throughout.

Oscar Niemeyer designed this building between 1935 and 1940 as his first completed architectural work. The project marked the start of his major career and displayed his innovative approaches to modernism.

The building displays hallmarks of Brazilian modernism through its adjustable sun screens and curved forms that remain visible today. These design choices show how the architecture responds to tropical climate needs.

The building is located in an easily accessible area near Lagoa and continues to serve its original purpose. Visitors should note its proximity to lakes and parks to understand the site within its urban setting.

The facade features adjustable concrete sun shields that Niemeyer implemented after returning from the United States. This practical innovation replaced the originally fixed version and shows his design evolution during construction.
