Estádio São Januário, Football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
São Januário is a football ground in the São Cristóvão neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro with a capacity of roughly 25,000 people. The main stand presents a classic facade from the 1920s that now carries heritage protection and shapes the character of the venue.
The ground opened in 1927 and stood as the largest in Brazil until Pacaembu in São Paulo was completed in 1940. Over the following decades it remained a venue for important matches and competitions that shaped the football story of the country.
The grounds serve as the home of Vasco da Gama, one of the four major clubs in the city. Supporters maintain chants and rituals that have echoed through the stands for decades and animate the surrounding streets on match days.
Access is by bus routes from the center and southern neighborhoods, with journeys taking between 30 and 60 minutes depending on traffic. On match days an early arrival is advisable as the surrounding roads become busy.
From certain seating rows the hills of the city and the Christ statue appear on the horizon in the background. This view connects the action on the pitch to the topography of the surroundings in an unusual way.
