Teatro Carlos Gomes, Art Deco theater in Praça Tiradentes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Teatro Carlos Gomes is an Art Deco theater on Praça Tiradentes in central Rio de Janeiro. Its main hall holds around 650 seats, and the stage is large enough to accommodate full-scale productions.
The building first opened in 1872 as a casino-style venue before it became a theater. A fire in 1929 forced a major reconstruction, after which it was renamed in honor of composer Carlos Gomes.
The theater takes its name from Carlos Gomes, a Brazilian composer best known for his operas. Today the venue hosts musicals, dance shows, and theater productions that are part of the regular arts life of Rio de Janeiro.
The theater sits on Praça Tiradentes, a central square in the city that is easy to reach by public transport. It is worth booking in advance for popular productions, as the hall fills up quickly.
Although the building was rebuilt in the Art Deco style after the 1929 fire, the original 19th-century foundations were largely kept in place. This overlap of two different eras is still visible in some details inside the building.
