Uberaba Formation, Geological formation in Triângulo Mineiro, Brazil.
The Uberaba Formation is a geological layer in Triângulo Mineiro made up of limestone, sandstone, and conglomerate containing volcanic material. This layer appears across several outcrops in the southeastern region, with some accessible through caves and waterfall sites.
Scientists began discovering numerous dinosaur fossils in this formation starting in the 1940s. These findings contributed significantly to understanding the Late Cretaceous fauna of South America.
The university in the region uses the site for educational programs and geological research activities. Visitors can observe how scientists approach the study of rock layers and fossil remains found here.
The formation is accessible through about eleven documented outcrops where visitors can see exposed rock layers. Some of these sites are located near natural features such as caves and waterfalls that add to the visit.
Remains of a large predatory dinosaur similar to Aerosteon were found here, contributing to understanding South American dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous. This discovery made the formation an important location for paleontology in Brazil.
