Palácio das Mangabeiras is a modernist residence with a white concrete structure situated at the foot of Serra do Curral mountain range. The building features geometric lines and large windows that flood the interior with natural light.
Oscar Niemeyer designed this building in 1951 as the official residence for governors of Minas Gerais and construction was completed in 1955. The project emerged during the development of Brasília and reflects the modernist vision of that era.
The gardens were designed by Roberto Burle Marx and blend native Brazilian plants with modernist landscape principles. The grounds show an interesting mix of natural shapes and geometric structures.
Visits are possible on weekdays and weekends during regular opening hours, with admission fees required. Visitors should expect stairs and varying elevation changes since the site sits on a hillside.
The former governors residence was transformed in 2022 into a public cultural center and is now open to the public. This change made one of Brazil's most important modernist works accessible to everyone.
