Campos dos Goytacazes, Commercial city in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil
Campos dos Goytacazes is a commercial center in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, located along the Paraíba do Sul River about 56 kilometers (35 miles) from the Atlantic coast. The municipality covers a large area that includes both densely built residential neighborhoods and rural zones used for agriculture.
A small settlement called São Salvador de Campos de Goytacazes was founded in 1677 and gradually grew. On March 28, 1835, the place officially received city status.
The name Goytacazes honors the indigenous people who lived here before Portuguese settlers arrived. Today the city shows its agricultural roots through sugarcane fields that stretch beyond the urban center, while oil industry workers form a visible part of daily street life.
Highway BR-101 connects the city to other regions and allows travel north and south along the coast. Bartolomeu Lysandro Airport offers flights to larger cities and makes access easier for visitors coming from more distant areas.
Offshore lies the Campos Basin, an area beneath the sea that holds substantial oil reserves. These deposits have transformed the local economy and regularly bring workers from other parts of Brazil to the region.
