Cataguases

Cataguases is an industrial municipality in southeastern Minas Gerais that sprawls across about 491 square kilometers. The town developed along the Rio Pomba, which plays an important geographic role for the region.

The town received official status in 1901 after developing from a settlement that emerged during the coffee plantation expansion of the late 1800s. This agricultural origin shaped its evolution into today's industrial center.

Filmmaker Humberto Mauro shot multiple films here during the 1920s, establishing the town as an early hub of Brazilian cinema. This artistic legacy shaped the local identity and continues to draw those interested in film history.

The town sits conveniently on highways connecting to major urban centers and is easily accessible from important cities in the region. Visitors should note that local roads and seasonal conditions vary, particularly during the rainy season from September to May.

The Rio Pomba flowing through the town experiences dramatic seasonal swings, rising high during rainy months and dropping significantly when dry weather arrives. These water level changes have shaped how the community developed and adapted over time.
