The area was transformed from indigenous territory into a formal settlement when Captain Antonio Januário Carneiro founded a church community in the early 1800s. This founding marked the start of European settlement and development in the place.
The name Ubá comes from U-Uva, a grass species that indigenous groups once used to make their hunting arrows.
