Afonso Cláudio

Afonso Cláudio is a mountainous municipality in Espírito Santo with nine administrative districts scattered across the terrain. The region features steep elevations and forested slopes, with each district positioned at different altitudes across the landscape.

The region was originally inhabited by Botocudo indigenous people before gold seekers arrived in the 18th century and established a settlement. This arrival of mining activity marked the shift from indigenous land use to permanent European occupation.

The São Sebastião celebration and Ox Cart Festival mark the local calendar throughout the year. Musicians and folk dance groups gather for the Sound in the Mountains Festival, showing traditions that residents have kept alive in their community.

The municipality is linked to other regions through highway ES-165 and has around 80 schools throughout the area, with EEEFM Afonso Cláudio serving as a major educational hub. Visitors should expect mountainous roads and can use the school as a landmark for orientation in town.

The area is crossed by several rivers that flow into Rio Guandu, and these water sources are recognized in Brazil for their superior drinking water quality. The geological conditions of the mountain region create natural filtration systems that keep the water clean.
