Forte de São Francisco Xavier de Piratininga
Forte de São Francisco Xavier de Piratininga, Military fort at Inhoã Cove, Vitória, Brazil.
The circular fort stands at the base of Penha Hill, featuring fifteen artillery positions designed to protect the southern entrance of Vitória Bay.
Construction began in 1675 under King Afonso VI of Portugal's orders, with major renovations occurring in 1702 under Governor-General Dom Rodrigo da Costa's direction.
The fort represents Brazilian colonial military architecture, incorporating Portuguese defensive engineering principles adapted for coastal protection in South America.
Visits to the fort require advance reservations through the Social Communication department of the 38th Infantry Battalion, which currently occupies the structure.
The fort's balustrade displays naval anchors, preserving elements from its period as a Naval Apprentice School between 1909 and 1913.
