Forte de São Francisco Xavier de Piratininga

Forte de São Francisco Xavier de Piratininga is a circular coastal fortification on the shores of Vitória Bay. The structure features multiple raised gun positions and was designed to command the southern approach to the bay.

The fort was built in 1675 by order of Portuguese King Afonso VI to protect the southern harbor. Major rebuilding occurred in the early 1700s to strengthen its defensive capabilities.

The fort's name references a Catholic saint and connects to the region's early missionary history. Inside, the stone walls and cannon placements still show traces of its long use as a military stronghold.

Visits require advance reservation since the site remains under active military occupation. It is best to contact the responsible department beforehand to confirm access conditions and timing.

Iron anchors are preserved throughout the grounds, left from when the fort briefly served as a naval training school. These objects mark an unexpected chapter in the site's history.
