Supreme Federal Court, Supreme court in Brasília, Brazil
The Supreme Federal Court is Brazil's highest judicial institution located in the Three Powers Plaza in Brasília. The building houses eleven ministers appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, who decide the most important legal matters of the country here.
The court originated in 1829 as the Supreme Court of Justice during Brazil's imperial period. After the republic was established, it was reformed as the Federal Supreme Court and later relocated to its current location in the new capital of Brasília.
The building was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and showcases modernist architecture that was revolutionary at the time. Visitors can experience the curved forms and open spaces that were typical of Brazilian design from that era.
Visitors can view the building from outside or arrange guided tours that are offered during business hours. The facility is easy to reach and centrally located on the plaza next to the other government buildings.
Since 2002 the court broadcasts all sessions on television, making judicial proceedings visible to ordinary citizens. This transparent practice is uncommon in Latin America and allows people to directly observe how justice is being administered.
