Pedra fundamental de Brasília, Monument at the geographical center of Brasília, Brazil

The Pedra Fundamental de Brasília is a pyramidal obelisk with a square base, standing 3.75 m tall from its foundations, on Morro do Centenário at 1,033 m altitude, 10 km from Planaltina. Its four faces are aligned with the cardinal points, and a commemorative metal plaque on the west face records the laying ceremony of 7 September 1922.

The cornerstone was laid at noon on 7 September 1922, the centenary of Brazilian independence, by order of President Epitácio Pessoa under decree 4,494 of 18 January 1922. The site, in the Quadrilátero Cruls 10 km from Planaltina, had been reserved for a future federal capital by the 1891 Constitution. Engineer Balduíno Ernesto de Almeida learned of the task only on 27 August, ten days before the ceremony.

The obelisk's west face carries a commemorative plaque recording that it was placed at noon on 7 September 1922 under President Epitácio Pessoa, by decree 4.494 of 18 January 1922. The site is tied to the prophecy of Dom Bosco, who dreamed of a promised land between the 15th and 20th parallels, a vision cited as the basis for the stone's position.

The obelisk stands on Morro do Centenário, reached by road about 10 km from Planaltina; the geodesic marker sits 7 m from the monument, 24 km northeast of Brasília's bus station in a straight line. The summit is open ground with no shade, so bring sun protection and water. The west face carries the commemorative plaque to read.

The obelisk is not the granite cornerstone the old text described: it is a 3.75 m square-based pyramid whose faces are aligned with the cardinal points, and the commemorative plaque sits on its west face. A geodetic marker of the IBGE stands seven metres away, set in concrete with a cast-iron lid.
