Jorge Amado Bridge

Jorge Amado Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge spanning Pontal Bay with two main towers that rise approximately 80 meters high. The structure links different parts of Ilhéus and features separate lanes for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles along its roughly half-kilometer length.

Construction started in 2014 under the Bahia state government as a major infrastructure project for the region. The bridge opened to traffic in 2020, significantly improving connections between different areas of Ilhéus.

The bridge carries the name of writer Jorge Amado, who was born in Ilhéus and set much of his literary work in this coastal region. As you cross, you can feel the connection to the stories that made this author famous throughout Brazil and beyond.

The bridge is open to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, offering good views of the bay throughout the day. Early morning or late afternoon hours provide the best experience, as traffic is lighter and the light is favorable for enjoying the crossing.

The structure uses advanced cable-stay engineering techniques that represented innovation for Brazil when completed. These technical features make it a notable example of contemporary Brazilian engineering in a coastal Bahia setting.
