Jorge Amado Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Ilhéus, Brazil
Jorge Amado Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge on the BA-001 highway that crosses Pontal Bay, linking central Ilhéus to the city's south zone. Its total length is 533 metres: a 298-metre cable-stayed section and 235 metres of reinforced concrete, with a 25-metre width carrying dual carriageways, a cycle path and a pedestrian lane.
Construction started in 2014 under the Bahia state government as a major infrastructure project for the region. The bridge opened to traffic in 2020, significantly improving connections between different areas of Ilhéus.
The bridge is named after Jorge Amado, the Ilhéus-born novelist whose books made the city known abroad. Its opening on 1 July 2020 was a reduced ceremony because of COVID-19, attended by governor Rui Costa and mayor Mário Alexandre. The name links a 533-metre infrastructure work to the region's literary reputation.
The bridge is open to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, offering good views of the bay throughout the day. Early morning or late afternoon hours provide the best experience, as traffic is lighter and the light is favorable for enjoying the crossing.
