Itagiba, Shipwreck site near Morro de São Paulo, Brazil

The Itagiba vessel, measuring 82.2 meters in length, operated along Brazilian coastal routes carrying both cargo and passengers during the early 20th century.

The German submarine U-507 torpedoed the Itagiba on August 17, 1942, causing the vessel to sink within ten minutes near the Bahia coast.

The sinking of Itagiba and other Brazilian vessels in 1942 led to substantial changes in Brazil's political position during World War II.

The wreck location at coordinates -13.333333, -38.666667 provides experienced divers an opportunity to explore this historical maritime site.

The Itagiba transported 96 soldiers from the 7th Artillery Group when it met its fate, leading to 36 casualties among its 181 passengers.
