Xique-Xique

Xique-Xique is a municipality in northeastern Brazil that spreads along the São Francisco River and encompasses several districts and localities. Regional roads connect it to the neighboring cities of Barra, Itaguaçu da Bahia, and Pilão Arcado.

Settlement history began in the 1680s when gold miners founded a community on Belvedere Island near present-day Xique-Xique. This early outpost became the foundation for the later municipality.

The name comes from the Pilosocereus gounellei cactus, a plant that grows naturally throughout the region and shapes the local landscape. This species is a natural symbol of the semi-arid backlands for many people.

The municipality sits at an elevation of about 400 meters and is well connected by regional roads to surrounding areas. Visitors should prepare for a dry climate typical of the semi-arid backlands.

Wind power plants have been developed near the municipality to generate clean electricity for the region. These installations show how traditional landscapes are adapting to modern energy needs.
