Baependy, Steamboat wreck site near Sergipe coast, Brazil.
The Baependy is a Brazilian cargo ship resting on the seafloor off the coast of the state of Sergipe. The wreck lies at a moderate depth in the Atlantic and is a known dive site in the region.
The Baependy was torpedoed by a German submarine in August 1942 and sank within minutes. The attack was part of a series of strikes on Brazilian ships that led Brazil to enter World War II shortly after.
The wreck represents a national memorial to those lost at sea and reflects how ordinary Brazilians experienced global conflict during the 1940s. The site connects the coastal community to a moment when their country became directly involved in the war.
The wreck is only reachable by boat from the coast, and sea conditions can vary a great deal depending on the season. Going with a local dive operator who knows the currents and visibility is a good idea.
The Baependy was carrying soldiers and civilians at the time of the attack, which made the death toll especially high. Together with other ships sunk that same night, it forms part of one of the worst maritime disasters in Brazilian history.
