Maragogi, Coastal municipality in Alagoas, Brazil.
Maragogi is a coastal municipality in Alagoas, Brazil, situated about 125 kilometers north of Maceió. Coral reefs run parallel to the shoreline, creating shallow basins where clear water pools over sand when the tide retreats.
The settlement was originally called Gamela and gained municipal status in 1887. Five years later, the name changed to honor the nearby river.
The name comes from the Marahub-gy river, a word rooted in the Tupi language spoken by the area's original inhabitants. Fishermen prepare their nets at dawn, and beachside shacks serve fresh catches prepared with recipes passed down through generations.
Travelers reach the area through airports in Maceió or Recife, both about two and a half hours away by road. Reef pools are best explored at low tide, so checking tide schedules helps plan visits.
The Gales lie about 6 kilometers offshore and become accessible at low tide, when retreating water exposes the coral banks. Boats carry visitors to these pools, where tropical fish swim among the coral formations.
