Ilha de Santo Aleixo, Coastal island in Sirinhaém, Brazil

Santo Aleixo Island is a coastal island off Sirinhaém with two beaches on its southern shore: Praia dos Pernambucanos and Praia da Holanda. The site features natural pools for swimming, a small residential building, and clear waters suitable for snorkeling.

In 1527, Spanish navigator Rodrigo Acuña and his crew took refuge on the island following a shipwreck. About a century later, French settlers arrived and gave it its current name while searching the coast for brazilwood.

The island's name comes from French settlers who arrived in the 16th century and named it after Saint Aleixo. Today, visitors can see how this colonial heritage shaped the way the place is organized and used.

Reaching the island requires arranging transport with local fishermen, as there is no regular ferry service. It is wise to bring water-resistant footwear and pay attention to tidal conditions, especially when exploring the natural pools.

The island sits on a volcanic rock foundation, which sets it apart from the typical coastal geology of the region. Over time, this geological base became overlaid with coconut palm plantations that replaced the original coastal vegetation.
