Fort Orange, Colonial fort on Itamaracá Island, Brazil

Fort Orange stands as a square military structure with four bastions overlooking the harbor entrance on the northern coast of Pernambuco state.

Dutch forces constructed the original wooden fortress in 1631 during their colonial expansion, naming it after the House of Orange-Nassau ruling family.

The fort maintains collections of archaeological artifacts, including lead projectiles and bone carvings discovered during extensive research expeditions.

Visitors can reach the fortress through multiple regional highways and participate in guided tours that present colonial military architecture.

Local artisan Joseph Amaro operates a dedicated workshop inside the fort, creating wooden sculptures influenced by Portuguese and Dutch heritage.
