Greater Natal International Airport, airport in São Gonçalo do Amarante, Brazil
The Greater Natal International Airport is a contemporary air terminal in São Gonçalo do Amarante that handles both domestic and international flights. The facility includes an expansive departure hall with numerous check-in counters, self-service kiosks, automated baggage handling systems, and spacious waiting areas with free Wi-Fi, while long paved runways accommodate large aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
The airport was planned in the mid-1990s and underwent an extended construction process with successive upgrades before opening in May 2014. This launch marked a turning point for the region's aviation infrastructure and replaced the older facility in Parnamirim, which had run out of capacity to handle growing passenger and commercial air traffic.
The airport operates around the clock and serves thousands of travelers daily with extensive parking facilities and public transportation stops near the terminal. Visitors should plan to arrive early, especially for international flights, as customs and immigration procedures can add considerable time to the departure process.
The facility became the largest export source for the Northeast region and pioneered a private management approach, marking Brazil's first airport privatization project of its scale. This partnership with a private operator brought modern management practices and capital investment that introduced fresh approaches to airport administration beyond what traditional public management had offered in the country.
