Forte dos Reis Magos, Star-shaped fort at Praia do Meio, Brazil.

Forte dos Reis Magos is a star-shaped fort built on a coral formation at the mouth of the Potengi River, connected to the mainland by a long walkway. The structure features thick stone walls with corner bastions surrounding a central courtyard and several interior buildings.

Portuguese colonists founded the fort on January 6, 1598, making it the first permanent European settlement in Rio Grande do Norte. This establishment marked a turning point in Portuguese expansion along Brazil's northern coast.

The fort represents an early Portuguese foothold and shows how colonizers used this location to establish control over the coast. Walking through it, you sense the importance this place held for early European claims in Brazil.

You reach the fort by walking along a long pathway from the beach, which can be affected by tidal conditions and weather. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as there is minimal shade inside the structure.

Parts of the original floor from the 17th century remain visible inside, showing centuries of wear and use. The chapel also contains hidden architectural details that visitors often miss when passing through.
