Newton Navarro Bridge, Cable-stayed road bridge in Natal, Brazil
Newton Navarro Bridge is a cable-stayed road crossing over the Potengi River in Natal that extends roughly 1780 meters from shore to shore. Two towers rise above the water and support the parallel traffic lanes with steel cables arranged in double planes.
Work on this river crossing began in late 2004 and was completed three years later in November 2007. The finished structure cost around 80 million dollars and was named after a well-known Brazilian architect.
The structure honors a Brazilian architect whose work shaped engineering projects throughout the country. His influence remains visible in modern Brazilian architecture today.
The crossing reduces travel time between the airport and the city center and handles around 39,000 vehicles each day. It runs between the northern and southern parts of the city and offers a more direct route through Natal.
An Italian engineer designed the concrete structure with precast girders that run parallel to each other and provide extra stability. This approach allows for a more even distribution of loads across the steel cables and towers.
