Our Lady of the Presentation Cathedral, Natal, Cathedral in Cidade Alta, Natal, Brazil.
The Catedral Metropolitana de Natal is a Catholic cathedral in the Cidade Alta neighborhood of Natal, Brazil, recognized by its trapezoidal facade and upward-sloping lines. The lower level of the building houses the Archbishop's Office and the diocesan administrative offices.
The cathedral was inaugurated in 1988, replacing an older church on the same site that had become too small for the growing city. Three years after opening, Pope John Paul II visited during his third trip to Brazil in 1991.
The cathedral stands in Cidade Alta, the old center of Natal, where religious and civic buildings sit close together. The square in front is regularly used for processions and public celebrations tied to the Catholic calendar.
The cathedral is easy to reach on foot or by public transport, as it sits in the center of Natal. Visiting outside of Mass times allows for a quieter look at the interior.
Beneath the main floor sits the Pio X Pastoral Center, a community space used for meetings, training, and social activities. Many visitors who see the church from outside have no idea that such an active space exists below.
