Museu "Câmara Cascudo", Art and archaeological museum in Tirol district, Natal, Brazil.
The Museu Câmara Cascudo is an anthropological, archaeological, geological, and paleontological museum located in the Tirol neighborhood of Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Its collections cover the natural and human history of the region, from fossils and minerals to objects tied to local ways of life.
The institution was founded in 1960 as an Anthropology Institute and moved in 1969 to its current building, which had previously housed a leprosy assistance organization. The change gave the museum more space to develop its collections and open them to the public.
The museum takes its name from Luís da Câmara Cascudo, one of Brazil's most respected folklorists, who was born and lived in Natal. His work on northeastern everyday life and traditions still shapes how people understand the region.
The museum sits in the Tirol neighborhood, which is easy to reach from central Natal on foot or by bus. Opening hours differ between weekdays and weekends, so it is worth checking before you go.
Some of the fossils in the paleontological collection can be touched directly by visitors, which is rare in museums. This hands-on approach gives the scientific objects a different kind of presence during the visit.
