Museum of St Helena, Local history museum in Jamestown, Saint Helena

The Museum of St Helena occupies a stone structure at the base of Jacob's Ladder and displays maritime and military items from the island's past. The two-story building contains artifacts that chronicle different phases of settlement and governance.

The institution opened in 2002 within a renovated power station from the late 1700s, coinciding with 500 years since European discovery. The building itself reflects how the island adapted technology to its remote setting.

The collections show how island life evolved and the influence of European powers on its development. Visitors see everyday objects and photographs that reveal how people lived and worked across different periods.

The location at the base of a major stairway makes it easy to find when walking through central Jamestown. Plan a brief visit as the space is compact and the display can be seen thoroughly in less than an hour.

The museum holds items recovered from vessels lost or deliberately sunk off the coast, including navigation gear from earlier sea voyages. These finds offer insight into the maritime dangers that surrounded the island throughout history.
