Johannesburg Zoo, Zoo complex in Saxonwold, South Africa
The Johannesburg Zoo extends across 55 hectares of land, housing over 320 species and approximately 2,000 animals in specialized enclosures and natural habitats.
Hermann Ekstein donated the land for the Johannesburg Zoo in 1904, initiating its development with a collection of ten animals including a lion and a giraffe.
The zoo maintains international accreditation standards and participates in breeding programs while providing educational tours and school holiday activities for children.
The facility operates daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with entrance fees of R100 for adults and R60 for children, including access to animal feeding demonstrations.
Visitors can navigate the extensive grounds using rental golf carts, with prices starting at R170 for a two-seater vehicle to explore the entire facility.
