Greek Orthodox Church, Joubert Park

The Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helen is a church building in Joubert Park with white walls and multiple roof levels. Its most striking feature is the three-story dome with a blue painted interior that draws your eye upward.

Architect Hermann Kallenbach designed this church in 1912 during a period when the Greek population was growing in the Johannesburg neighborhoods of Yeoville and Berea. It was built as new communities were settling in the area.

The church maintains Eastern Orthodox traditions that the Greek community has cultivated across generations. You will notice this in the religious ceremonies and the way worshippers use the space together.

The church is easily accessible by public transportation from downtown Johannesburg and sits in an active neighborhood with other local attractions nearby. Visitors can find their way easily and explore the surrounding streets on foot.

The Ladies Benevolent Association raised 3300 pounds over six years to fund construction of this Byzantine-style church. This remarkable effort shows how important completing the building was to the community.
